Quick answer

Pick the piece above, type its width, depth and height, and tap See it in my room. Your phone’s camera opens and the sofa, bed or table stands on your floor at its real size: walk around it, see how much of the room it takes. It works in Safari or Chrome on an iPhone or iPad and in Chrome on most Android phones, with no app and nothing to pay.5,6 Under it, two quick checks: will it go through a 32-inch door, and will it fit the room size on the listing.1

Will it fit, in six numbers

Mattress sizes are U.S. standard sizes; door, hall and stair sizes are the building code’s least.

How to measure

Three numbers, and one for doors.

A tape and two minutes. Measure the widest points.

In shortMeasure the widest points: arm to arm, the front of the arms to the back, the floor to the top. For doors, the diagonal depth matters most.

From the front Width: the outside of the arms Height From the side Depth: front to back Diagonal depth: the narrowest it gets when tilted
Width, depth and height are the outside of the piece. The diagonal depth is what a door sees when the sofa is tilted back.

Common sizes

Bed sizes, and what most pieces measure.

Mattress sizes are standard. Everything else, measure.

In shortA queen is 60 by 80 inches, a king 76 by 80. The frame adds a few inches; the room needs walking space on top.

Getting it inside

Will it go through the door?

Six things movers check before the truck comes.

In shortMany sofas that look too big go through on their back, with the legs off. The tight spot is usually a turn, not the door.

Standing: 38 inOn its back: 34 inLegs off: 30 in
Looking through the same 32-inch door at the same 84 × 38 × 34 in sofa: standing or on its back it is too wide; on its back with the legs off, it passes.
1

Measure the open door

Open the door all the way and measure from the face of the door to the frame on the other side. That clear width, not the door’s size, is what the piece passes through.

2

Turn it, legs off

A sofa goes through its narrowest way: often on its back, so its height, not its depth, has to fit. Most sofa legs screw off and save a few more inches.

3

Take the door off

Lifting the door off its hinges usually adds about 1.5 inches. Movers do it all the time.

4

Check the turns

The door is rarely the problem alone: the turn at the top of the stairs or into a narrow hall is. The code allows hallways and stairs as narrow as 36 inches.2

5

Townhouses and condos

Many townhouses have a stair turn and a 36-inch stair; many condos have an elevator door and a hall to pass. Measure those too, or ask the building’s manager.

6

Ask before you buy

Many furniture stores give the “diagonal depth” and whether the back or arms come off. Ask for it before you order a big piece.

Before you buy the house

Room sizes on a listing.

How to use them, and when to measure yourself.

In shortA listing’s 12 × 14 is a rounded, wall-to-wall size. Measure the wall the piece would go on.

A

Room sizes on a listing are rounded

A listing usually gives a room in whole feet, like 12 × 14, measured wall to wall. Closets, radiators, a door’s swing and a window seat are not taken out.

B

Measure at the showing

Bring a tape, or a phone with a measuring app, and measure the wall where the sofa or bed would go, and the doors on the way in. Ahmed measures for his buyers.

C

Then see it in the room

Standing in the room, type your piece’s size and tap See it in my room. It stands on that floor at its real size, so you see the walkway that is left.

Questions

What people ask about furniture and room sizes.

Can I see my furniture in my room with my phone camera?

Yes. Pick the piece, type its width, depth and height, and tap See it in my room. On an iPhone or iPad it opens in Apple's AR Quick Look; on Android it opens in Chrome's camera view. The piece stands on your floor at its real size, and you can walk around it.

Do I need to download an app?

No. It works in Safari or Chrome on iPhone and iPad, and in Chrome on Android phones that support Google Play Services for AR, which most phones from the last few years do. Inside Instagram or Facebook's own browser it can't open the camera: open the page in Safari or Chrome.

Is it really true size?

Yes. The model is built at the inches you type and its scale is locked, so it can't be pinched bigger or smaller. How exactly it sits depends on the phone finding the floor: move the phone slowly over the floor in good light first. Check it once against a tape measure.

Will my sofa fit through the door?

Measure the door open, from the face of the door to the frame. If the sofa's height or depth is less than that, it goes straight through. If not, turned on its back or tilted it needs less, and less again with the legs off. The door check above works out the narrowest way.

How wide is a standard door?

The building code asks for at least 32 inches of clear width and 78 inches of clear height at a home's exit door; inside doors are often narrower. Hallways and stairs must be at least 36 inches wide. Measure your own doors: that's the number that counts.

Will a king bed fit in a 12 by 12 bedroom?

A king mattress is 76 by 80 inches, about 6 ft 4 in by 6 ft 8 in; with a frame, closer to 80 by 86 inches. In a 12 by 12 room that leaves about 2 to 3 feet on each side of the bed and at the foot. The room check above draws it.

Does the page see or save my camera?

No. The model is made on your phone, and the camera view is your phone's own AR viewer, not this page. Nothing you type or film is sent anywhere.

Your next step

Will your furniture fit the house you like?

Send me the address. I will measure the rooms, doors and stair turns at the showing and tell you where the sofa and the bed go. I answer in English or Arabic, with real numbers, not a pitch.
